Put it on repeat
With a looming TikTok ban, I'm reflecting on some top artists I've discovered on the clock app.
There is no doubt the music industry has been greatly impacted by the way sound circulates on TikTok. As a place where artists can blow up overnight without paying for marketing, but the app’s features are being seen in other places like Spotify and Soundcloud. (Check out Full Rate No Cap for more music business news).
With the looming TikTok ban, I have been reflecting on the many new artists and songs I have discovered through the app.
This is a very abbreviated list of artists I return to again and again:
Meltt
Another band pulled from the Actuality archives and this one is bound to be featured in my 2023 Spotify Wrapped. (Read more here!)
This alterna-psychedelic rock band brands themselves as shapers of audio dreamscapes. At home on a playlist alongside Foals and Foster the People, the band have been busy releasing a new EP “Another Quiet Sunday.”
AUDREY NUNA
Audrey Nuna’s skilled rapping and wavy bass lines were an integral part of my playlists during the pandemic as I finished my bachelor’s degree.
She started releasing music is 2018 and now her songs have been streamed millions of times and she has collaborated with successful artists like Jack Harlow and Saba.
Couch
Couch is one of the first bands Actuality ever featured. (Read more here!)
Their funky, jazzy sound is perfect to add to any dance party playlist. Incredibly talented musicians, their live shows are full of sick improvisations.
OMA
Gathering a following of 162k on TikTok and over a quarter million on Instagram, this band from Manchester gained popularity after covering MF DOOM’s “Rap Snitch Knishes feat. Mr. Fantastik.”
Playing live shows around Europe, the band just released “Solomon The Rich Kid,” only their fourth song on Spotify.
Elijah Fox
His jazzy piano tracks are dreamy melodies that have been used in thousands of videos. A pianist, composer, and producer, Fox records sample packs that can be used by other artists.
He recently released “Fading” with Amaria (featured in Actuality last week here), a venture into R&B and Neo-soul.
