“Shapers of audio dreamscapes.”
Alternative-psychedelic rock band Meltt use layered synths, heavy riffs, and unique bass lines to “sonically paint your soundscape and sweep you into an ethereal dream.”
Primarily self taught, the group puts an emphasis on layered song writing mixed with detailed production. Meltt is a perfect addition to any playlist featuring Foals, Glass Animals, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Tame Impala, or Last Dinosaurs (previously featured in Actuality here).
Their 2022 single “Within You, Within Me” is a perfect song to play in the car with the windows down. The music video, directed by Sterling Larose, is incredibly creative and layered, just like the track. Watch it here.
In an interview with Illustrate Magazine, the band shared how they got together. From the North Shore of Vancouver, Chris Smith (lead vocals, guitar, keyboard, bass), Jamie Turner (drums/percussion), and James Porter (vocals, guitar, keyboard, bass) grew up playing in bands together. Porter moved to Vancouver from England in high school, and joined Smith and Turner in a band covering classic rock legends like Eric Clapton, Queen, and The Beatles.
When the three went off to college, Porter went to Montreal while Turner and Smith stayed in Vancouver. Throughout that first year, Turner and Smith would play together and shared demos and songs with Porter. Once they decided they were going to officially become a band, Porter transferred to The University of British Columbia so they could pursue their dream.
Bassist Ian Winkler grew up in the same town, a year younger than Turner and Smith. He joined them just after their 2019 album “Swim Slowly,” but didn’t become a permanent member until he finished college and returned to the west coast.
The band is gearing up for a tour around the Pacific Northwest and Southwestern U.S. through February and March, tickets here. They have also been welcomed back as an official artist for SXSW 2023.
The band hasn’t released an album since 2019, but released two singles, “Within You, Within Me” and “Only in Your Eyes,” in 2022. With one more dropping soon, hopefully a new full album is on the horizon.
Their new single “Blossoms” will be released this Friday, January 20th!
