With the upcoming release of The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds Snakes, a prequel to the original trilogy, the extravagant fashion in the dystopian world is being revisited. And it’s not all that different from current high end trends and haute couture.
New designers are finding creative ways to meet these extravagant trends with the emergence of slow fashion. Over the top looks with oversized billowing coats or head to toe red jewels are still reserved for celebrities, while typical street style is dominated by Zara, Shein, and the occasional thrifted item.
ORA_ is a fashion start-up trying to do something new with their garments. Seeming to take inspiration from Dr. Seuss’ thneed, their clothes are many looks in one.
These transforming clothes would fit into the world of The Hunger Games if the residents in the Capitol were having a casual day. Founded by Elana Wallach, she wanted to create a brand that offered sustainable and accessible alternatives to fast fashion for the younger generation.
Wallach’s personal designs are incredibly intricate with great attention to detail, even creating her own textiles.
There is an upward trend in emerging sustainable fashion brands to emphasize clean materials with clean silhouettes and pops of color. These unique pieces are interesting additions to predictable capsule wardrobes that were trending during the pandemic. And while thrifting is popular, no one is going to find a garment that can be worn as pants or as a dress in your neighborhood Goodwill.
