TikTok has effectively changed how music is consumed.
The algorithm supports short-form videos, in turn making audio clips between 9 and 15 seconds long incredibly popular. Artists and bands not only use the app to promote new music, but use it to test new ideas.
Bronx based Ladji Mouflet is one of many DJs that share their musical experimentation on TikTok. Creating remixes perfect for any Casey Neistat vlog, Mouflet seems to sample anything he can get his hands on.
He recently got his hands on a SP-404 MK II wave sampler and has been sharing the new music he is creating while learning the machine. DJs like this effectively use mixers, wave samplers, and so much more as electronic instruments. Each of these elements require a certain level of skill to use just like any other musical instrument.
His most recent single, “Tori’s Ballad (Ladji LoFi-mix),” was released earlier this year in collaboration with Marigold.
Two years ago, Mouflet only had 78 monthly listeners on Spotify, he now has 332,100 monthly listeners and 2 million likes on his TikTok account, proof that hard work truly does pay off. Since he released “Baiana 2022” in the fall of 2022, the track has now been streamed 4.7 million times.
Mouflet creates cool EDM, calypso inspired remixes using samples from songs like “Baiana,” “Blue World,” and even the “Want a break from the ads?” Spotify sound. The chill beats are perfect as a daily background soundtrack for studying, reading, or even doing nothing.
