How often do you observe the world around you? What kind of chair are you sitting in? What color shirt are you wearing? Can you hear people around you?
Now that you’re acquainted with your current position in the world, could you capture it? Not with a simple picture but with pen and paper? This is a skill Denver artist Paul Heaston has mastered.
Heaston sketches anything from a class of artists to his children reading on the couch or even his book bag leaning against the wall. With curved perspective lines, fast sketch marks, and a confident hand, his drawings are full of character. Often including his sketch book resting on his crossed legs, Heaston will draw any space he finds himself in.
He has three books, “Sketches Vol. 1” and “sketches of cars and trucks,” and “Sketchbook 2019-2020,” available on Amazon. His sketchbooks are chronological, a kind of visual diary of Heaston’s experiences over the year. His artwork has also been featured in many more books about sketching, including “The World of Urban Sketching” by Stephanie Bower. Check out his Amazon storefront for all the materials he uses for his work and even some books he recommends.
Posting almost daily, Heaston shares timelapses and photographs as well as drawing and perspective tips. Having grown his platform significantly on Instagram and TikTok, Heaston also teaches many classes. He has many courses on sketching available on Craftsy here and even has some free PDFs from workshops.
